Held at our university for the first time among Korean universities

Promoting the Utilization of Over 1,500 Public Research Outcomes

On September 12th, 2023, our university hosted the '2023 Inter-Ministry Public Technology Transfer Commercialization Roadshow,' with the participation of 9 government ministries, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, and the Korean Intellectual Property Office. This event, now in its 10th edition since its inception in 2013, marked the first time it was hosted by a domestic university.


The opening ceremony was attended by President Seoung Hwan Suh, Director In-Sil Lee of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, and Director Ji-Hyun Kim of the Industry-Academia Collaboration Division. Additionally, it was graced by the presence of President Seung-Ryul Jung of Kookmin University, President Jong-Heon Kim of Kwangwoon University, and President Jin-Suk Lee of Chungnam National University, representing the 9 universities recognized for their excellence in knowledge property management. Also present were representatives from government-funded research institutions, Director Jae-Woo Lee of the Korean Intellectual Property Strategy Development Institute, officials from 9 government ministries, and leaders from related organizations. Over 1,000 individuals, including industry professionals interested in the approximately 1,500 public technologies exhibited at the roadshow and students from our university passionate about intellectual property rights and entrepreneurship, registered for the event, making it a resounding success.


President Seoung Hwan Suh, in his address, expressed deep pride in the fact that the '2023 Inter-Ministry Public Technology Transfer Commercialization Roadshow' was held at our university, marking the first occurrence of such a meaningful event among domestic universities. He emphasized, "At a time when we are faced with significant societal challenges, including slow economic growth, an aging population, climate crises, and national security issues, it is essential to address these overlapping, colossal issues through research supported by government ministries. Universities must not only engage in research but also consider how the research outcomes can be effectively utilized."


The Inter-Ministry Technology Transfer Roadshow is a collaborative event among various government ministries that facilitates technology exchange, utilization, and investment. It aims to match outstanding public technologies generated through national R&D with domestic companies, enabling these technologies to be smoothly utilized and commercialized. This event seeks to activate exchanges and cooperation between universities and government-funded research institutions, the primary agents of research and technology supply, and businesses, the technology consumers. Its purpose is to promote industrial innovation, societal issue resolution, and job creation. The event has been held annually since 2013.

During this event, participating universities and government-funded research institutions showcased their outstanding technologies, engaged in technology consultations with businesses, recognized excellence in intellectual property management, and held startup competitions. Additionally, various lectures were conducted, and a special IP Talk Concert involving our university's aspiring entrepreneurs was organized in collaboration with the Director of the Korean Intellectual Property Office.


Our university also presented numerous outstanding technologies, including five AI-based technologies developed by Professor Lee Joon-Sang's research lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which were discovered through the Knowledge Property Creation and Utilization Support Project conducted by the Industry-Academia Collaboration Division, led by Director Ji-Hyun Kim, starting in 2023. These technologies include CARDIOS, an AI-based software for predicting cardiovascular risk, MIAS FACIAL, a system for quantifying facial asymmetry and monitoring filler procedures, N-UDS, a non-invasive urodynamic examination system, Glaucoma Suspect (GS) Monitoring System for glaucoma prediction, and a CBCT noise reduction system. These technologies were developed based on real medical field demands and were proactively protected by intellectual property rights with commercialization in mind.

Meanwhile, the Industry-Academia Collaboration Division, serving as the holder of our university's patent technology, has been actively executing the Knowledge Property Creation and Utilization Support Project (MVP Project) supported by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and the Korean Intellectual Property Strategy Development Institute since February 2023. Prior to this initiative, the Industry-Academia Collaboration Division was recognized as an excellent institution for patent quality management by the Korean Intellectual Property Office in 2021, owing to their efforts in customizing policies to meet the demands of researchers. Furthermore, the Knowledge Property Team within the Industry-Academia Collaboration Division has been proactively planning and implementing researcher-oriented knowledge property utilization policies, such as the '2023 Knowledge Property Optimization Policy,' with the aim of creating robust patents that protect our university's outstanding research outcomes and are needed by domestic companies.
