GEEF 2023 Is to Be Held to Overcome and Resolve the Global Crisis

On February 2 and 3, under the themme of "Turning Point: From Crisis into Opportunity"


On February 2 and 3, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, will hold the 5th Global Engagement & Empowerment Forum on Sustainable Development (GEEF 2023) under the theme of "Turning Point: From Crisis into Opportunity."


Many distinguished figures, including Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Heinz Fischer, the 11th Federal President of Austria, Amina J. Mohamed, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Deputy Chair Graça Machel of the Elders (former First Lady of South Africa), Foreign Affairs Minister Park Jin of South Korea, former Foreign Affairs Minister Kang Kyung-wha of South Korea, Mayor Oh Se-hoon of Seoul, Professor Emeritus Hyung Suk Kim of Yonsei University, Ports Shipping and Aviation Minister Premalal Jayasekara of Sri Lanka, Health Minister Rick Mahe of Vanuatu, Senior Vice President Ellana Lee of CNN International, and Vice Chancellor Mohd Hamdi of the University of Malaya will participate in the forum.


The GEEF, which will be held for the fifth time this year, is a forum involving experts in sustainable development from around the world to form a consensus on various problems in the international community and seek solutions.


The forum will be held with in-depth discussions on various international community issues, including a keynote speech by Deputy Chair Graça Machel, digital health, diagnosis of infectious diseases, smart cities, the future of higher education, climate change crisis, social innovation, and decarbonization.


In addition, unique programs such as the special session on Yoon Dong-ju, the poet of peace, the Yonsei Young Star session, and the artists’ talk are prepared to increase the diversity and public participation of the forum.


"This year is a critical time when half of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030) pass, and we need to make a sober assessment of past achievements and move forward for better goals," said President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University. "This forum is a turning point to overcome the unprecedented global crisis and build global cooperation."


"The GEEF has been gaining global recognition through holding successful forums," former UN Secretary-General Ban said. "I hope many of you will join us in taking steps toward a sustainable future and lead the world's sympathy."


Those who wish to participate can register in advance through the official website (https://www.geef-sd.org) until February 1, and on-site registration can be made at the Centennial Hall on the very day.


The event is co-hosted by the Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment at Yonsei University, Global Social Contribution Institute, the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future, and the Ban Ki-Moon Centre for Global Citizens in Austria'. It is sponsored by Fleishman Hillard, the Korea Polar Research Institute, the Korea Maritime Institute, Botanic Sense, and 119 Reo.
