New Massive Open Online Courses Offered by Yonsei Faculty

-MOOCs Increasing Yonsei’s Visibility Internationally, Sharing Korean Studies with the World

Three six-week-long massive open online courses (MOOCs) are currently being offered by Yonsei faculty on the FutureLearn and Coursera platforms. Professor Michael Kim from the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) is teaching “Modern Korean History” through FutureLearn, with nearly 8000 students enrolled. Business Professor Chang Dae-ryun is leading “International Marketing around Asian Regions,” which is designed for companies and individuals who are preparing to conduct business in Asia. Finally, Professor Chung Jong-moon of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is providing a specialized information technology course. For this course, which deals with wired and wireless network communications, the internet, augmented reality, and cloud computing, students gain credit towards a certificate when they submit a final project.

For all these MOOCs, there is no limit to the number of students who can enroll. Students interact with each other and receive feedback through question and answer sessions, study groups, discussion forums, and quizzes. The MOOCs are free of charge, and Yonsei is the only Korean university to be offering them on both Coursera and FutureLearn. Yonsei has also been selected as a participating university in the government’s K-MOOC pilot project, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Lifelong Education. Three new MOOCs will be offered by Yonsei professors beginning in September.
