On November 29, over 100 Yonsei volunteers took part in the sixth annual Briquette Sharing Movement, distributing 6,000 briquettes to needy households in the Seodaemun area. The 3.5 million won needed for this year’s movement was donated by student volunteers, faculty members from the College of Medicine, and Yonsei alumni. The Yonsei Volunteer Center coordinated the efforts.

The briquettes were given to elderly individuals living alone and low-income families. Yonsei sophomore Kim Su-jin, who serves as student leader of the Volunteer Center, said of the movement: “I was surprised to learn that there are so many elderly individuals and poor families in Seodaemun-gu that struggle to make ends meet. I hope that this event helps to raise awareness of our neighbors in need and that more Yonseians will volunteer in the future.”

French Language and Literature student Yoon Jung-wook spent his birthday delivering briquettes to senior citizens along with seventeen other volunteers. Following the morning’s orientation, the group set out, quickly discovering that it is not easy work due to the weight and shape of the briquettes. Yoon, however, emphasized that the difficulty was well worth it, as the recipients repeatedly expressed their gratitude to the volunteers. “I am very proud to have taken part in this worthwhile event,” he said.
