—Yonsei Remains Top-Rated Private University in Asia

According to the British publication Times Higher Education (THE), Yonsei is the 17th-best university in Asia, and 190th in the world. This is seen as encouraging news, as Yonsei improved three places from last year’s THE Asia rankings, while remaining the top private university in Asia. In Korea, Yonsei continues to be ranked 4th, trailing Seoul National University, KAIST, and POSTECH.

To compile its World University Rankings, THE employs thirteen different performance indicators, which are grouped into five areas: 1) Teaching: the learning environment (30%); 2) Research: volume, income, and reputation (30%); 3) Citations: research influence (30%); 4) Industry Income: innovation (2.5%); and 5) International Outlook: staff, students, and research (7.5%).

Overall, THE included fourteen Korean institutions in its rankings of the top 100 Asian universities. Eighteen Chinese universities were ranked this year (an increase of three from last year), while Japan had twenty ranked universities (a decrease of two). Taiwan had thirteen universities in this year’s THE Rankings, after having seventeen appear on the list in 2013.
