World’s First Eco-Friendly “POSCO Green Building”

- Yonsei and POSCO Collaborate on Project Using Cutting-Edge Green Technology

The world’s first eco-friendly, multiplex “POSCO Green Building” has been built on the Yonsei International Campus (YIC).  Conceived and realized through the collaboration of Yonsei and POSCO, the Green Building was constructed using cutting-edge green technology, and it is designed to significantly reduce energy consumption, while facilitating environmentally responsible and sustainable practices for waste management. The POSCO Green Building is a split-level structure, with four stories at its highest point, a spacious ground level, and a basement underground. The space is to be used for offices, communal residences, and “modular” residences.   The Green Building came to fruition thanks to the research and design (R&D) initiative of the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, “Research on Expansion of Green Technology Based on New Construction of Green Buildings in the Market.”  This governmental R&D project is intended to foster concepts such as innovation, coexistence, and evolution, and the Green Building, as one of its “test bed” projects, is meant to aid in developing new eco-friendly approaches to architecture and construction.  Because of the substantial energy reductions created through the collaboration of Yonsei and POSCO, it is believed that the Green Building will serve as a model for future eco-friendly construction projects throughout the country.

- Will Save 52.5% More Energy Compared to Existing Buildings.
- Reduced CO2 Emissions; as Much as 475 Tons Each Year.

The POSCO Green Building was designed to minimize energy consumption and lessen its greenhouse effects.  Compared to existing buildings, the Green Building will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by as much as 475 tons per year, while saving 52.5% more energy.  Because of these remarkable reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions, Yonsei and POSCO officials may begin marketing similar green buildings for domestic construction. The dedication ceremony was held on November 19 at the YIC.  Among the more than 250 guests in attendance were Yonsei President Jeong Kap-young, POSCO President Kwon Oh-joon, Lee Hwa-soon from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, and National Assemblyman Jo Jung-sik of the Democratic Party.  At the ceremony, a detailed video presentation of the project’s design and construction was shown, and a tour of the facility was provided, which included a first-hand look at the materials and technologies that were used in the construction.
