Yonsei Professor Sohn Il and Graduate Student Sung Suk-jung First Asian Recipients of ASM Marcus A. Grossman Young Author Award

Associate Professor Il Sohn, from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and his Yonsei graduate student, Sung Suk-jung, have been awarded the 2013 ASM Marcus A. Grossman Young Author Award.  Established by the ASM in 1960 to recognize the accomplishments of Dr. Marcus A. Grossman, whose basic research on steelmaking methods and metallurgical advances earned him international acclaim, the Young Author Award is given annually to an author (or co-authors) under forty years of age who has published an article in the journals Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A or B during the past year.  Professor Sohn and Sung, the first Asian recipients of the award, were recognized at the 2013 ASM Awards Dinner in Montreal, Canada on October 29.  Jointly published by ASM International and the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B are highly respected, peer-reviewed journals for metallurgy and materials science.  Professor Sohn and Sung received the Young Author Award for their article “Crystallization Behavior of the CaO-Al2O3-MgO System Studied with a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope,” which has important implications for the steel industry, potentially allowing it to obtain greater revenues from the reclamation of waste slag, a byproduct of the ironmaking and steelmaking processes.  That is, by more fully understanding the crystallization behavior of steelmaking slag, the industry will be better able to develop applications that reduce the difficulty and cost of recycling slag, which is used, for instance, in the manufacture of high performance concrete.  Professor Sohn’s and Sung’s research was partially supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of Korea.
