The 5th Youth Global Leadership Camp (YGLC) was held July 31-August 2 at the Yonsei International Campus in Songdo.  With the theme “Future Leaders Shout for Peace,” this year’s YGLC welcomed 186 student council presidents and vice presidents from 102 different Korean high schools.  The camp was co-sponsored by Yonsei’s Leadership Center and the NGO Good Neighbors.
The YGLC was established in 2010, following an agreement between the presidents of Yonsei University and Good Neighbors.  The goal of the camp is to train the next generation of global leaders to contribute to a peaceful and more tolerant future by giving back to society, especially through service and volunteer activities.
This year, the camp’s program was designed by the “Leaders Club,” a Yonsei student organization run by the Leadership Center.  In particular, the participants were challenged to think through some of the most troubling issues affecting children across the globe, including child abuse, child labor, child marriage, and poverty and disease.  Choi Mi-na, Team Manager of Good Neighbors International Development Team, gave a lecture on “Child Abuse and International Initiatives to Prevent It,” while Young-mi PD, a conflict specialist and director of MBC’s “Special Report—Iraq Troop Dispatch, the Faraway Path,” spoke on “The Site of Global Violence and Our Role.”  After each of the lectures, the students participated in debates and discussions in which they proposed various approaches and solutions for preventing child abuse and combatting violence on a global level.
