Between August 7th and 15th, President Jeong Kap-young visited several prestigious California universities with the aim of further developing Yonsei’s global network.  During the trip, President Jeong also attended Yonsei alumni events and took part in the dedication ceremony for the “Peace and Friendship Bell” at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles.  The ceremony, which included dignitaries from both sides of the Pacific, commemorated the 128-year relationship between Good Samaritan and Yonsei’s Severance Hospital.
President Jeong’s delegation visited five different campuses of the University of California system, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara, as well as the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).  During the visit, UC Berkeley agreed to join Yonsei University’s “G10” consortium.
The ongoing G10 project was initiated by Yonsei with the goal of creating a network of top universities from around the globe.  The current member institutions, which participate in joint education and research projects, are, along with Yonsei, Keio University, Hong Kong University, Princeton University, Cornell University, and King’s College London.  With the addition of UC Berkeley, the consortium will have seven full-fledged members.
In an interview for the US edition of the JoongAng Ilbo, President Jeong emphasized Yonsei’s status as a “world class university,” pointing to the success of the Yonsei International Campus (YIC) and its Residential College (RC) program, as well as the G10 Global Network Project and its recent inclusion of UC Berkeley.  Speaking with journalists from the US bureau of the Hankook Ilbo, President Jeong stated his intention to establish “Yonsei Offices” in Los Angeles and Geneva, following the successful launch of the Yonsei Office in Tokyo.  One of the most important functions of these offices, he said, will be to attract international students to Yonsei.
