In Korea, paying separately, particularly for a restaurant bill, when going out as a group is referred to as ‘Dutch pay.’ The expression evidently comes from ‘Dutch,’ meaning the Netherlands, and the English verb ‘pay.’ In this sense, Dutch is not unfamiliar to many Koreans. Some names or items related to the Dutch which are familiar to Koreans include Guus Hiddink, the former coach of Korea’s national soccer team, KLM Airlines, tulips, and the windmill. On May 17th, it was Dutch Day at Yonsei University. The Dutch Day event was organized by Yonsei Global and NUFFIC (Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education) NESO (Netherlands Education Support Office) Korea, a non-profit organization founded by NUFFIC and financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education. In attempt to promote Dutch culture as well as study abroad programs and the educational system of Holland, the organization is visiting universities in Korea, including Kyunghee University, Seoul National University, Hanyang University, and University of Seoul. The Dutch Day event, held in the Global Lounge, was attended by hundreds of students. There were four main themes: food, clothes, sports, and education. The event offered a variety of traditional Dutch food, including Stroopwafle, Heineken beer, and cheese. In addition to a display of traditional clothes and wooden shoes, students were able to try them on and take pictures. The jeans brand G Star Raw also gave out some pairs of jeans. In the Netherlands, one of the most popular sports games is speed skating. For the event, a speed skating online game was furnished, grabbing the attention of many students. As for education, Yonsei students were able to obtain information about the educational system in the Netherlands, study abroad programs to the Netherlands, and Dutch culture. In particular, Ms. Yoon Jee-young from NESO Korea offered a lot of information about education in Holland, while a Dutch exchange student at Yonsei, Van Koolwijk ark Damianus, shared his national culture and answered questions from his audience.
