Lee Jung-myung, Chairman of Emerson Pacific Group, Awarded Yonsei Social Services Award “Living true to Noblesse Oblige…supporting middle and high schools at risk of closing, helping teenagers out of juvenile hall” Lee Jung-myung, Chairman of Emerson Pacific Group, was awarded the Yonsei Social Services Award in recognition for his devotion towards helping the needy and for his servant leadership. Yonsei Social Services Award is awarded to a person of distinction earnestly aiming to create a beautiful world with Yonsei based on Yonsei’s ideals of education – truth and freedom – through volunteer activities. Chairman Lee is the seventh person to be granted the award. Former winners include Good Neighbors Chairman Lee Il-ha, The Purme Foundation Executive Director Paik Kyung-hak, and Cho Byung-guk, former Director of Holt Children's Services. Chairman Lee saved Namhae Haesung Middle and High Schools and fostered them into prestigious schools. Managing leisure-related businesses including Daemyung Development, Hilton Namhae Golf & Spa Resort and Kumkang Ananti Golf & Spa Resort, he acquired Haesung Institute at the request of the governor of Namhae-gun in 2006. He invested KRW8 billion of his private fortune in Haesung Middle School and Namhae Haesung High School and built a dormitory for the students as well. As a result, the schools which were at the risk of closing became outstanding schools. Last year, he received a certification from the Korean Association of Private Elementary, Middle and Secondary Schools for his effort. Furthermore, he realized the need to help juvenile delinquents after hearing the story about a girl who attempted suicide by setting herself on fire feeling nothing but despair in life. He provided the expenses necessary for the girl’s antipyretic surgery and treatment. In March, Chairman Lee, who was appointed as the president of Korea Juvenile Protection Association, spent a week at the juvenile hall and experienced firsthand the lack felt by the teenagers there. He introduced caddy programs for the inmates and is leading the movement of ‘Talent Donation’ by corporations. He helped the inmates get employment in golf-related fields and is providing cooking programs for them for jobs at branches under the Emerson Pacific Group such as “Bonjuk” and “Attal Tteokbokki.” Born in South Chungcheon Province, Chairman Lee graduated from Yonsei University with a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering. In 1995, he entered the golf and leisure business establishing the Chungang Tourism Development Company which became Emerson Pacific Group in 2004. The group manages five golf courses around the country. In 2009, Chairman Lee received the national medal for his devotion and effort in aiding schools with scholarship and sponsorship programs. Meanwhile, Huh Soo-hyun (Senior, Nursing) and Lee Sang-gak (Senior, Biochemistry) were awarded the Volunteer Service Award for their involvement in various volunteer activities sharing love with those in need.
