The 4th Yonsei Model United Nations (YMUN) 2012 was held with great success by Yonsei Leadership Center from January 13th to 15th at Baekyang Hallway and the Main Auditorium. In this year’s event, about 300 middle and high school students participated. YMUN is hosted by YMUN Representatives which is a student-led association under the Leadership Center and has been receiving a lot of attention for its contribution to nurturing global leaders since its beginning in 2009 and subsequent growth. During the opening ceremony, Park Eun-Ha, head of Development Cooperation Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave a keynote speech for the students. Based on her experience in the international stage, Park highlighted to the students the need for active understanding and interest in changing international affairs in order to solve the problems the international society is faced with. Moreover, she said that participating in Model United Nations at a young age provides a great opportunity to understand the role and function of the United Nations, and she also said that the students could become global leaders who will lead Korea and the international society in the future in a responsible way. At “YMUN 2012” the General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, Security Council, United Nations Human Rights Council, United Nations, US National Security Council were held for high school students. For middle school participants, the General Assembly and United Nations Environment Program were held. For the three days that YMUN was being held, participants role-played the diplomats of their designated nations and experienced the process of discussing, writing up, and finally voting on resolutions. All conferences were held in English. Professor Kim Yong-ho (Political Science and International Relations) said, “Participating in the MUN provides the best opportunity to enhance one’s understanding of international issues, to improve English debate skills, and to nurture diplomatic skills,” and evaluated that “What differentiates this from other MUNs is that Yonsei MUN representatives pass on to participating students the global capacity and know-how that they have learned from participating in the international MUNs every year.” YMUN representatives were nationally the first to form a representative group at the university level in 2004 and have won first place in international MUNs held in New York in both 2009 and 2010. The 8th YMUN representatives will participate in this year’s international MUN that will take place in New York from April 1st to 5th.
