Professor Song Gi-won’s biochemistry research team has illuminated the biochemical adjustment procedures to terminate mitosis, the process of replicating and distributing chromosomes during cell division. With yeast, the team revealed the protein-protein interaction in the cells involved with the mechanism of termination. The mechanism of termination of mitosis is a core process for the daughter cell to maintain dielectric stability and initiate new cell divisions. These findings have been published on January 12th in an online issue of PLoS genetics (IF 9.543), an authoritative journal in Genetics. Professor Song’s research team found that the four amino acid groups of Bfa1, a protein that operates as a switch in the termination signal transduction system, become phosphorylated by certain phosphoenzymes; and accordingly, the suitable period for mitosis is regulated from the change of location in the cell. Also, in both cases when the dielectric stability in the cell is threatened and when it is not threatened, the termination and the period of mitosis can be delicately controlled. When the termination of mitosis is not properly executed, the dielectric stability becomes inhibited, generating damage in the DNA of daughter cells and dysplasia in microtubules. As a basic research on cell division, this study in the long run is expected to produce more contributions on the technical development of cancer cell control.
