In the 2011 World University Rankings issued by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education evaluation company in England, on September 4th Yonsei University was ranked 129th, which is 13 places higher than last year. Yonsei’s ranking in the QS rankings has increased 107 places since its first ranking of 236th in 2007, 203rd in 2008, 151th in 2009, 142nd in 2010 and 129th in 2011. While major universities in Korea have shown increase in the rankings over the years, Yonsei’s rise in the rankings has been significantly noticeable. Yonsei is not only ranked in first place in the rankings of private universities in Korea, but also gaining more recognition as a ‘global university’. According to the QS rankings report, Yonsei’s scores for academic reputation were 72.4 (110th), recruiter review 37.5 (179th), faculty-student ratio 7.1 (89th), journal publication 18,308 (2006~2010), for impact factor 59,690 citations (2006~2010, self-citations excluded), foreign faculty rate 5.3% and international student rate 10%. The rankings by academic field were Humanities & Arts 81st, Technology Engineering 170th, Medical Bio-Science 136th, Natural Sciences 191th and Social Science & Business 85th. The top global university rankings were Cambridge University, Harvard University, MIT, Yale University and Oxford University. Rankings of universities in Korea were Seoul National University 42nd, KAIST 90th, POSTECH 98th and Korea University 190th.
