Yonsei Defeated by Korea with 1 Win, 3 Losses, and 1 Draw “It’s okay because we did our best!” Yonsei University was defeated by Korea University in the 2011 Yon-Ko Games hosted this year by Yonsei discontinuing the school’s consecutive victories for the past three years. Yonsei lost both rugby (8 to 5) and soccer (3 to 1) on September 24th. On the 23rd, Yonsei lost the basketball game (67 to 63), tied on the ice hockey (1 to 1) and won the baseball game (1 to 3). Taken together, Yonsei scored 1 win, 3 losses, and 1 draw. Nevertheless, the cumulative scores for the past 41 years of Yon-Ko games still put Yonsei ahead of Korea University with 18 wins 15 losses and 8 draws. The first baseball game started out great. Yonsei’s baseball team scored a 3 to 1 victory despite previous analysis that it lagged behind Korea University in strategy. However, the good moments were soon gone as it was defeated by Korea during the basketball game which started at 2 P.M in the Jamsil stadium. It was a loss especially hard to swallow given that Yonsei’s basketball team had always been considered superior to Korea’s. Yonsei was far ahead at the beginning of the game with a score of 28 to 6, but was soon outdone by Korea during the 3rd and 4th quarters, ending the game in bitter loss at 63 to 67. Ice hockey was the last game of the first day and was held in the Mokdong Ice Rink. The 1 to 1 draw was also hard to take for Yonsei given that Yonsei traditionally holds the upper hand in ice hockey. With the tie, Yonsei was still able to maintain its 13 year long no-lose record since 1998. With the first day ending in 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 draw, it was difficult to predict the final winner. Initially, there were expectations that Yonsei would eventually come out as the final winner since Yonsei’s rugby team is relatively stronger than Korea’s. Although the team experienced defeat by Korea University’s rugby team with a close game of 33 to 36 last May, Yonsei defeated Korea by an overwhelming score gap at 38 to 20 during last year’s Yon-Ko rugby game. However, as even the rugby team was unable to come back victorious, students and players could not hide their disappointment any longer, with the rugby players even showing tears on the field. Students were devastated when Yonsei was defeated in the soccer field as well by 1 to 3. President Kim came up to the cheer stand and thanked teams of Yonsei for doing their best. He said, “We won the last Yon-Ko Games, so it was time for us to give way to Korea University anyways.” Many students from both Korea and Yonsei University cheered for their teams until 5 P.M. In the evening on September 24th, students and alumni enjoyed a party on the campus’ Baekyang-ro. They drank beers and watched the performance by Sistar. Although they lost this year’s games, Yonsei alumni came together as one.
