On March 11th, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, spawning a massive tsunami. The death toll is expected to reach tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless. Japanese students studying at Yonsei have also lost their homes and family members. The Office of International Affairs made quick contacts with Japanese students at Yonsei, inquiring of their family’s safety or at least any recent connections. A Japanese student in the MA program of Korean Language & Literature, Kumagai Yuichi reported his mother to be missing; and freshman student Harada Yumiko reported that her home in Japan was damaged from the flooding from tsunami. To help such Japanese students at Yonsei, donation campaigns were held on campus. From March 16th to 30th, donation boxes were set up in front of the Central Library, at the Global Lounge and the Korean Language Institute office. The donations collected will be used for scholarships and compensation funds. On March 14th, Yonsei President Kim Han-joong sent a letter of consolation to the President of Keiyo University and to the Japanese Ambassador. Also, a special donation which was collected by Yonsei faculty members was delivered to the Japanese Embassy.
