Unmarried lady with 40-year teaching career donates 7.5 hundred million won “My sister wants to donate all of the property she has accumulated during her lifetime. She is suffering from an illness, so I am calling instead to inquire about the donation process.” In mid-February, the Office of External Affairs and Development received a call from Ms. Jung’s brother. A few days later, Ms. Jung Bong-suk visited Yonsei with her brother and sister-in-law. Ms. Jung offered to donate the apartment she lives in, and she requested to sign the donation agreement on this visit. The sum of her donation reaches 7.5 hundred million won. A university official said, “This is a very large donation to be given all at once.” Born in Shinuiju, North Pyongan, Ms. Jung finished her elementary, middle, and high school education in Seoul. During the 6.25 Korean War, she moved to Daegu and majored in History Education at the Teacher’s College of Kyungpook National University. She has taught middle school students for 40 years; and since their parents passed away early, she has taken care of her younger brother and sister. As she remained single during her whole life, Ms. Jung had shared her idea with her siblings to donate her property as scholarships for students from needy families. As a devout Christian, she chose to make her donations to Yonsei University. Just a few weeks after her visit to Yonsei in February, she passed away. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last summer and was informed that she did not have much time left. On the day Ms. Jung passed away, Yonsei University President Kim Han-joong and officials from the Office of External Affairs and Development visited the funeral parlor at Yonsei Severance Hospital. “She has left an extraordinary legacy of help and hope to Yonsei students.”
