Special lecture by the former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kim Chang-jun On March 10th, the former member of the United States House of Representatives, Kim Chang-jun presented a special lecture under the theme “Leadership and Advancement in Korean Politics”. Mr. Kim argued that “the nomination rights held by each party must be given back to the people”. He pointed out that members of the National Assembly have more loyalty to party officials than local residents. Because of the party’s nomination rights, political members cannot present their opinions, acting as a “yes man” to the party. Mr. Kim also indicated that it is against the principle of checks and balances or the separation of the three powers for a member of the National Assembly to hold a position of Minister. He added, “It is nonsense that politicians who criticized the government just until the previous day suddenly support and work for the government.” Mr. Kim Chang-jun further proposed that for Korea to become an advanced country, Korea needs to pass FTAs which instigates more trades, and to suggest the UN Security Council, which carries out unreasonable decision-making by world powers, to be superseded by the G20. He believes that “To develop leadership, which is an acquired factor in modern societies, all you need is to memorize names and have the guts to call people by their first name; the rest is all effort”.
