A joint research between Professor Lee Sang-gyu (Biotechnology, Yonsei) and Professor Seo Se-won (Chemistry, Seoul National University) was recently issued on the online version of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The research team discovered that Helicobacter pylori protein JHP940 is directly conveyed to the cell, causing infection. Helicobacter pylori is known to be a pathogenic bacterium involved with stomach cancer. People who are infected carry different strains of pylori, which determine the severity of the disease. JHP940 is a protein found in the Helicobacter pylori strains and activates NF-kB, inducing infections in the stomach cell. The joint research has demonstrated the three-dimensional structure of JHP940, also having discovered that the infection inducement believed to be caused by JHP940 was both instigated and increased by the protein kinase activity in JHP940.
