Professor Mun Il (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) verified the safety of hydrogen gas which emits from the ballast water electrical decomposition sterilizing device, which was developed by Techcross. Ballast water refers to fresh or salt water, sometimes containing sediments, held in tanks and cargo holds of ships to increase stability and maneuverability during transit. The UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires ballast water to be sterilized in order to prevent destruction of the ecosystem caused by the movement of ballast water. Techcross had already produced the sterilizing device of ballast water, using electrical decomposition, which had been approved by international organizations. However, the global market demanded Techcross to “verify the safety of hydrogen gas”, which was a substantial burden for a small-medium business to take up. To help Techcross, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation and Yonsei University collaborated in confirming the safety of the hydrogen gas and suggesting ways to improve the safety as well. These results enabled to Techcross to restart business sales, reaching an export sales record of 140 million dollars. An official from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation said, “The collaboration between public enterprise and university helped such a small-medium business overcome the high trade barriers, not only boosting competitiveness, but also achieving successful export sales records.
