[YONSEI NEWS] Middle & High School Students Debate on International Issues

3rd Yonsei Model United Nations The Yonsei Leadership Center held the 3rd Yonsei Model United Nations (YMUN) from Jan 1st to 9th at the auditorium in Baekyang Hall. As an YMUN-affiliated student council, the Yonsei Delegation for Model United Nations (YDMUN) organized the 3rd YMUN with around 300 middle and high school students from 148 schools across the country taking part in the event. In the opening ceremony, Han Seung-soo, former Prime Minister and President of the 56th session of the UN General Assembly, delivered a keynote speech, encouraging the students to focus on global issues and engage in such activities. He shared his experience as president of UN General Assembly and pointed out the importance of learning and understanding global matters. He said, “Taking part in the Yonsei Model United Nations at such an early age is a special opportunity to understand UN’s role and function in the global community. These young students will become global leaders of the future.” The YMUN consists of 6 councils (General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, International Atomic Energy Agency, Security Council, United Nations Children’s Fund, and League of Arab States, and the student participants became representatives of certain UN countries, speaking for their representing country on the appointed issues. For 3 days, the students became diplomats of their representing countries, drafting resolutions, and debating with other countries. As the first UN student delegation in Korea, the YMUN is in its 7th year in organizing programs and engaging in conferences. At the NMUN held in New York, the YMUN won the Outstanding Delegation Award both in 2009 and 2010. From Feb 17th to 20th, the 7th YMUN delegation will participate in the Harvard National Model United Nations.
