The Cleveland Orchestra in Korea after 32 years The funds, donated by Louis Severance and his son, John, generated another gift to the Yonseians—The Cleveland Orchestra, the top American ensemble. Hosted by Severance Hospital, The Cleveland Orchestra’s second performance in Korea was presented on November 21st at the Seoul Arts Center in celebration of the 125th anniversary of Jejungwon. Jejungwon was constructed in 1885 as the first western medical hospital in Korea. In 1904, founder Oliver R. Avison transformed Jejungwon into Korea’s first modern medical hospital with the donated funds by Louis Henry Severance, renaming it Severance Hospital. Severance Hospital has become a leading medical college and hospital in Korea with state-of-the-art medical treatment. Founded in 1918, the Cleveland Orchestra led a nomadic existence until John Long Severance, son of Louis Severance, donated funds to erect the Severance Hall. The Cleveland Orchestra has become one of America’s five great orchestras, standing today among the world’s most-revered symphonic ensembles. Under its music director Franz Welster-Most, the Cleveland Orchestra presented Debussy’s “Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune,” Mozart’s Divertimento in D major, K. 136 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”. The orchestra’s performance in celebration of the 125th anniversary of Jejungwon’s establishment was especially meaningful with regard to the good deed of father and son—Louis Severance and John Severance. On the day of the performance, the executive director Gary Hanson visited Severance Hospital with 8 cellists who performed a mini-concert for the patients. They also visited the children’s hospital building and delivered teddy bears and a cello performance to the young patients. Mr. Hanson said that it was an honor to visit the great legacy of the Severance family.
