Professor Kim Yong-ku from Hallym University was selected as a recipient of the 16th Yongje Prize. Professor Kim is currently working as a director of Hallym Academy of Sciences and a distinguished professor. The award ceremony was held on March 9th at Luce Chapel, Yonsei University. The prize was established by Yonsei University in the 100th anniversary of Yongjae Baek Nak-joon's birth to commemorate and promote his achievements. Doctor Baek, the first University President of Yonsei, devoted his life to the nation's higher education and to the development of Korean studies. This year's Yongjae Prize recipient, Professor Kim Yong-ku, contributed to founding historical studies on Korean diplomacy. With a critical stance on international relations studies centered in Europe and powerful nations, he developed the body of works from an autonomous viewpoint. Especially in the field of diplomatic theories and international relations in the latter era of Korean Empire, Professor Kim is regarded as the most influential scholar, offering a fine balance of factual research and critical interpretation. Professor Kim graduated from the Department of International Relations of Seoul National University in 1961 and received his MA in Political Studies at the same university. His Ph.D thesis submitted to Seoul National in 1979 proposed a "Historical Study on the Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and Socialist Internationalism in the Theories of Soviet International Law." He served as professor at Seoul National University and had been a director of the Korean Association of International Studies. In 2002, he was selected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is currently working as the director of Hallym Academy of Sciences at Hallym University and is an emeritus professor at Seoul National University.
