The Late Han Il-chung Received Honorary Diploma from Yonsei "This person was not able to finish his studies at Yonhee College since he was deceased while actively contributing to the independence and building of Korea. In commemoration of his patriotic spirit, Yonsei University confers this honorary diploma." The late Han Il-chung (1899~1960) received his diploma from his alma matter 50 years after his death in 1960. On February 22, Yonsei University conferred an honorary diploma on her deceased old member who was suspended from Yonhee College in 1926 while confined in jail for his participation in the anti-Japanese June 10 Movement. During his lifetime, Han had been incarcerated for more than 8 years for his participation in the independence movement. In June 1926 when he was a sophomore at Yonhee College, he purchased a printing machine with his colleagues and printed out thousands of written appeals to hand them out with Korean national flags. He was arrested before he commenced the action. The message on the papers were as follows: "Fellow citizens of Korea, let's stand up against our enemy! The price of blood is freedom, the independence of Korea!" For this incident, he was sentenced to probation and suspended from the college. After he was suspended from Yonhee College, he moved to Japan and worked as a reporter for a while. Then again, he established an organization for the independence movement. He was sentenced to 5 years confinement while taking part in an enlightenment movement for farmers and working class. After the Korean War, however, he could not reveal what he did for the independence movement. For he participated in a socialist movement in 1930s, he was not given proper recognition. He did not even let his children know about his past. Only his nephew Han Yoon-dong, who knew well about his uncle's involvement in the independence movement, thought that there was something wrong. Barely remembered for what he did for his country, Han Il-chung passed away in 1960. It was around the year 1984 that Han Il-chung's contribution was revealed. A doctorate student from Keimyung University visited Han Yoon-dong, asking for various records that was not known even to Han Il-chung's own descendants. It was then when Mr. Han's cousin started looking for the record of his uncle. In 2004, his descendants finally visited the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to request the government to officially recognize him as a patriot who had contributed to the independence of Korea. As a result of his descendant's efforts, the late Han Il-chung finally received a decoration as a patriot last August. Following this official restitution, the long overdue diploma from his alma matter was granted to him this year.
