The famous “tunnel in front of Yonsei” where students and riot police often clashed against each other during the military regimes is to be demolished and renovated into a railway bridge. Graffiti works by young underground artists would also vanish with the renovation. Seodaemun-gu office announced on December 28 last year that it submitted a renovation plan of the slope for railway to the city government. The slope that stretches from Sinchon Train Station to the opposite side of Yonsei’s main gate (500 meters long, 10 meters high) will be removed and renovated to an elevated railway bridge made of steel. The renovation plan purports to revitalize business around the area and to provide more space for pedestrians. According to the plan, promenades and parks as well as parking lots will be built under the railway bridge. An official from the urban planning bureau of Seodaemun-gu office commented, “There were many criticisms of the slope that it blocks pedestrian flow and isolates the businesses around it” and “the city government required Seodaemun-gu office to investigate the possibility of redevelopment last February.” With the renovation of the slope, another plan is being considered to develop an underground shopping arcade under Sungsan-road, a 12-lane road running past Yonsei University’s front gate.
