'Dream Start,' a mentoring program commenced by Yonsei on May 2009, provides mentoring on school work, personal matters, and cultural activities to children and juveniles in low-income families in the local community. The program aims to help and encourage children who lack opportunities to learn, as well as to offer opportunities to gain self-confidence and to acquire socializing skills. Seodaemun-gu Office, where Yonsei University is located, provided a list of 50 elementary and middle school students. Yonsei students are doing 6 to 9 hours of volunteer activities for the students every week, providing various activities such as cultural activities and counseling as well as scholastic tutorial. Unlike other mentoring programs, Dream Start has a well-prepared support system for mentors and mentees offered by a supervising group composed of 4 graduate level supervisors from education majors. There are currently 80 mentors including 10 male students. The first 50 female students participated in the program since May, and 30 other students joined later.
