Doctor Shin Jaiwon of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was named Associate Administrator for Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate on February 1. This position is the third highest ranking position in NASA. Doctor Shin graduated from Yonsei in 1982 and continued his studies at California State University, Long Beach, for his master’s degree and Virginia Polytechnic Institute for his doctorate degree. In 1989 Doctor Shin began working with the Aeronautics Projects Office at NASA's Glenn Research Center. Due to his impressive management, he was promoted in 2004 to Deputy Associate Administrator at NASA’s headquarters, a position which he has kept for four years. Doctor Shin stated his goals on January 24 in these words: “"NASA's aeronautics programs develop the concepts, tools, methods and technologies that address many of the challenges faced by our nation in air traffic management, safety and the environment. We will continue our commitment to meet these challenges through technical excellence, integrity and strong partnerships with other government agencies, industry and academia."
