700 Yonseians Participate in National Effort to Revive the Coast The Yonsei Volunteer Group and Yonsei Student Association visited the Taean area for three days of clean-up. From December 27-29, 700 student and faculty members worked together to show their love and concern for the residents and the environment of the area suffering from the recent massive oil spill. Students of the College of Theology, College of Social Sciences, and College of Engineering student associations also visited the area to help out. As part of Yonsei’s vision of “Servant Leadership”, the Yonsei Volunteer Group donned rubber boots and gloves, masks, and protective clothing and used old towels and clothes to wipe the oil from pebbles and rocks. One of the participating students explained their reasons for this volunteer work, saying, “I feel that coming here will make it possible to share the pain of the residents of this area and help create a better world.” The Hebei Spirit oil spill is the worst oil spill in Korean history, and the area struck by this disaster is spreading daily as tarballs float as far as the Jeju area. In the immediate areas, 400 fish farms (5,000 hectares) were drenched in oil. The army, police, and some 600 thousand volunteers have aided the residents in their efforts to fight the devastating oil damage.
