Building a Strong Infrastructure As part of Yonsei University’s ongoing effort to become a top international institution, the year 2008 will be an important year of furbishing a strong material basis for its development. The construction of the Songdo Global Academic Complex, forming the core of Yonsei’s future prospects, will be launched this year in view of its opening in March 2010. The 120th Anniversary Academy Information Center, the new digital library, has almost been completed, with work beginning or continuing for other major facilities such as the 2nd International Dormitory, Health and Welfare Center, Gymnasium, School of Business Building, Gwangbok Hall II, Engineering Lecture Hall, Yoo-Jin Nursery, and GS Industrial-Academic Cooperation Center. With its newly confirmed status with JCI accreditation, the Medical Center will see the completion of its new main building and funeral hall, with construction beginning on its new Cancer Center. At the Wonju Campus, marking its 30th anniversary, construction will be completed for the University Chapel, Administrative Building, and a new high-tech laboratory/lecture hall. Songdo Global Academic Complex To Open March 2010 in Incheon Free Economic Zone Construction of the massive Yonsei Songdo Global Academic Complex will be launched this year, which is expected to open in March 2010. The Complex is earmarked to become the veritable center of education and research in East Asia, with its “Global Campus” with 5,000 international and domestic residential students, a “Joint University Campus” consisting of the branches of major international universities, an “R&D Campus” with international corporate research institutions, the “Global Academic Village” with residential and cultural facilities, and facilities to be shared with the community. 120th Anniversary Academy Information Center The Academy Information Center, Yonsei’s new digital library, is nearing completion. Located behind the current Main Library on the former grounds of the Jang Gi-Won Memorial Hall, the new Center, furnished with the state-of-the-art digital equipment, will house many facilities including the multimedia center, Jang Gi-Won Memorial Room, and the Institute of State Governance. Gwangbok Hall II of School of Law The second Gwangbok Hall will open in Spring 2009, in conjunction with the opening of the Yonsei Law School. Gwangbok Hall II will consist of a mock law court and law library. This new building will play an important role in reaching the School of Law’s goal of “Yonsei Law 5-2-10-1” (namely, “second ranking law school in Korea in five years, top law school in Asia in 10 years”) by training law professionals dedicated to upholding democracy and justice. Benefiting from Yonsei’s pioneering role in genuine internatinalization, Yonsei Law School will be the leading institution both in Korea and in East Asia of providing legal education fit for the age of globalization. Health & Welfare Building The new Health & Welfare Building is being built next to the Student Union Building, and the construction process will include the remodeling of the original Student Union Building. The two buildings will be linked together to form between themselves an integrated service area for students, with various convenience facilities and service departments situated in one location. Noteworthy is the fact that the construction is mostly funded by the Yonsei Co-Op (university cooperative society), making the building a vivid evidence of the communal spirit of Yonsei. Engineering Hall I and Lecture Hall An extra story has been added to the Engineering Hall I, along with a new Lecture Hall. These additions will resolve the serious shortage of space in the College of Engineering for research and education, and will aid the College’s impressive effort to compete with the top Engineering institutions of the nation. Also, the concentration of lecturing spaces achieved by the Lecture Hall is expected to greatly increase the efficiency of education. 2nd International Dormitory A new International Dormitory to house 650 international students and faculty will be completed by August 2009. The new dormitory, which will be Yonsei’s first BTL (build-transfer-lease) project, will be located in front of the current International Dormitory, and is expected to become part of Yonsei’s globalization infrastructure, along with the New Millennium Hall and Institute of Language Research and Education, all located close to the dormitories. School of Business The new School of Business building is being constructed east of the current School of Business and Economics. The new building was designed by world-renowned architect Alvaro Siza to blend in harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment. All facilities were designed with consideration to light, air, and view, to ensure maximum comfort of all users. The new building will house an electronic library, multimedia room, and convention hall in addition to research, lecture, and lab facilities. Eugene Nursery Eugene Nursery is a daycare facility for faculty and graduate students. The Nursery is expected to help Yonsei members with young children focus on their work, greatly enhancing the quality of education and research at Yonsei. With the opening of the Nursery, Yonsei will meet childcare regulations and become a leader in university welfare efforts. The new nursery will be constructed with the help of the Eugene Group, a construction corporation founded by a Yonsei alumni. GS Industrial-Academic Cooperation Center The GS Industrial-Academic Cooperation Center will be built in cooperation with GS Caltex, and together with the GS Hydrogen Station, completed in September 2007, is expected to become an important facility for developing new clean energy and training research personnel. Through these facilities, Yonsei will be able to function as the center of hydrogen fuel cell research. Advanced Science and Technology Center Three stories will be added to the Advanced Science and Technology Center. The new stories will be used for the Yonsei Vision 2020 “Global 5-5-10” project and other major projects. Gymnasium A new gymnasium will be built on the current baseball field grounds. The new gymnasium is expected to enhance the quality of physical education and overall physical welfare at Yonsei, with various arenas, exercise rooms, auditoriums, labs, offices, and classrooms. [Medical Center] Cancer Center Construction of the new Cancer Center will begin in April 2008 to be completed in 2011. The Yonsei Medical Center, which has led the nation in cancer diagnosis and treatment, will reaffirm its status as the best Cancer Center in Korea with the construction of this Cancer Center, and move on to becoming a leader of cancer treatment in Asia. The Cancer Center will function on a team system based on the 11 major cancers for an organic and cooperative approach to cancer treatment, while ensuring that in all diagnosis and treatments the patient’s interests should come first. New Hospital Building and Funeral Hall The construction of the new hospital building and funeral hall will be completed by 2008. The new funeral hall boasts a modern design with a business center, extra-large VIP mortuary, and lodging facilities for guests. In addition to the funeral hall, the new building includes the administrative headquarters and education, research, and welfare facilities, including the Graduate School of Public Health. [Wonju Campus] Wonju Campus successfully adopted the “Residential College” program, a mentoring program in which professors and students are encouraged to work together closely. Accordingly, Wonju is increasing various facilities to accommodate the new system, with the University Church, Administrative Service Center, and Advanced Laboratory & Lecture Hall opening in October 2008. University Church The University Church is expected to uphold the fundamental values of the Yonsei Spirit and lead students to a stable campus life. The new church will include facilities for services, a book café, counseling room, prayer room, choir room, and a room for babies. Administrative Service Center The Administrative Service Center (Main Building) will concentrate in one location the administrative departments of the campus, which are currently dispersed throughout various buildings, to help them function more effectively and provide higher quality service. Advanced Laboratory & Lecture Hall The Advanced Laboratory & Lecture Hall will function as a research facility in which experiments of the highest level can be conducted. Labs for biotechnology related departments (Life Science, Biological Resources & Technology, Clinical Pathology), lecture halls and computer rooms will be included in the new building. Student Dormitory The new student dormitory, a 16.5 billion won project, will be completed in January 2009. On completion of this dormitory, 65 percent of Wonju students will be housed in the dorms, affirming the university’s goal of becoming a veritable residential college. The new building will house 900 students, and will include various convenience facilities for the students.
