[YONSEI NEWS] The Times Higher-QS World University Rankings

The Times Higher-QS World University Rankings Yonsei’s ranking jumped to 236th in the 2007 worldwide university rankings, published by the Times Higher Education Supplement on November 9. The criteria used by the Times for the evaluation are peer review (40%), faculty citation (20%), staff-to-student ratio (20%), recruiter review (10%), ratio of international faculty (5%) and ratio of international students (5%). Seoul National University rose to 51st from 63rd last year, with KAIST following at 132nd (198th last year) and POSTECH at 233rd. Yonsei’s new ranking of 236th is a notable jump from 484th last year, while Korea University dropped 93 steps to 243rd. The highest ranking university is Harvard, with Oxford, Cambridge, and Yale tied at second place. Yonsei Ranks 256th in Shanghai Jiao Tong University International University Rankings According to the ranking of 500 universities worldwide, announced August 8 by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Institute of Higher Education, Yonsei ranks 256th. Yonsei also ranks between 25th and 42nd in Asia and second in Korea, preceded by only Seoul National University. KAIST follow Yonsei at 278th while POSTECH, Korea University, and Sungkyunkwan University are in the 305-401 range. The number one ranking goes to Harvard University for the fifth consecutive year. Stanford University and University of California – Berkeley rank second and third, and the University of Cambridge (U.K.) ranks fourth. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) claims the fifth spot. Ranked 271st in Taiwan Ministry of Education Science Research Article Evaluation Yonsei is ranked 271st in the “2007 International University Science Research Article Evaluation,” recently published by the Taiwan Ministry of Education Higher Education Review Committee. The evaluation is based mostly (80%) on article-related factors, such as the number of articles published between 1996 and 2006, the number of articles published in 2007, and number of citations (1996-2006). Other factors included faculty size and education environment. Among Korean universities, Seoul National University is placed highest at 107th. Other Korean universities in the top 500 are and KAIST (334th), Korea University (349th), POSTECH (372nd), Sungkyunkwan University (408th), Kyungpook National University (436th), Chonnam National University (456th), and Hanyang University (463rd). Harvard ranks first once again in this evaluation, while Johns Hopkins University takes second place and the University of Washington (Seattle, Washington) third.
