[YONSEI NEWS] Yonsei-Samsung Electronics LCD Industrial-Academic Cooperation Agreement

Joint Research for Original Next-Generation Display Technology Promoting the Establishment of the Samsung LCD Industrial-Academic Center Yonsei University and Samsung Electronics LCD shook hands on an industrial-academic cooperation contract in order to cultivate high-quality human resources and develop original next-generation display technology. The ceremony was held on November 21st at 3pm at the Seminar Room in the main building, and the following participants were in attendance: President Jung Chang-Young, President of Administration Youn Dae-Hee, President of the Graduate School Kim Yoo-Sam, President of the Engineering College Kim Moon-Kyum, President of Samsung Electronics LCD Lee Sang-Wan, Vice President and Head of the Research Center Suk Joon-Hyung, and Vice President and Chief of Development Kim Sang-Soo. This contract aims for collaboration in education with the aim of cultivating high-quality human resources and promoting joint research for new technological development in the LCD and next-generation display fields. Samsung Electonics plans to support Yonsei with approximately 6 billion won in scholarships and research funds over the next five years. 6 Billion Won Support Plan Over 5 Years As one of their joint education programs, Yonsei will be selecting 20 undergraduates and 20 graduate students as recipients for the Samsung Electronics scholarship. Also, both Yonsei University and Samsung Electronics will be participating in joint research programs for new and source display technologies. Yonsei and Samsung Electronics will be founding the “Samsung LCD Industrial-Academic Center” to promote efficient collaboration of both education and research. They will also ensure excellent human resources with master’s/doctor’s degree programs from the engineering department including electronic engineering. Also, the students with scholarships will have the opportunity to gain field experience in the Samsung Electronics intern program. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is sending out their staff for graduate courses. They can receive master’s/doctor’s degrees at Yonsei, and these programs will enhance Samsung Electronics’ human resources. Other programs such as touring Samsung Electronics’ LCD department, donation of equipment and facilities, and CEO courses will be established through the Samsung LCD Industrial-Academic Center. Following the ceremony, President Lee Sang-Wan gave an invitation address entitled “LCD Vision - Anytime, Anywhere, Anysize” to 450 Yonsei students and faculty. He stated, “The industrial-academic cooperation contract with Yonsei University has brought enterprise and university closer together. This cooperation will reinforce the revitalization of the engineering field by continuously cultivating outstanding professionals.” In the meantime, 70-inch full HD TVs, 82-inch LCDs, electronic paper, organic EL displays, and internal semiconductor sensor mobile displays were on show in the auditorium of the Engineering Building.
