[YONSEI NEWS] The Fifth Korea-Japan Millennium Forum / Yonsei-Korea-Keio-Waseda

Exchanges Among the Elite Universities of Northeast Asia On October 30, Yonsei, Korea, Keio, and Waseda Universities held the Fifth Korea-Japan Millennium Forum. To develop leadership in Northeast Asia in the 21st century, the two countries decided to create a partnership. The forum was held in Waseda University in 2002, Yonsei University in 2003, Keio University in 2004, Korea University in 2005, and again in Waseda University this year. The forum was titled "Korea-Japan, A New Challenge," and began with the opening address from Waseda University's President Sirai Gatzhiko. It was followed by the keynote speech titled "Korea, A Most Invaluable Country" by Yamamoto Ichida, a member of Japan's House of Councilors. Yonsei-Korea-Keio-Waseda Approve the Enforcement of a "Collaborative Academic Degree" Program The first session was titled, "The Future of Learning Exchange Between Korean and Japanese Universities." Yonsei University's President Jung Chang-Young, Korea University's President Au Yoon-Dae, Keio University's President Anzai Yuichiro, and Waseda University's President Shirai Gatzhiko explained their school's current status, vision, and plans for future globalization. The 4 presidents further discussed ideas to promote international exchange programs, and plan to create a separate committee solely for the development of the "Collaborative Academic Degree" Program. "Politics and Joint Security"was the title of the second session, and discussions were held regarding the security system of Northeast Asia. The debated issues were on the North Korean nuclear crisis, the entry of Japan's Prime Minister Abe, Japan-Asia diplomatic relations, China's rapid growth, and how these issues will effect East Asia's security. The third session was titled "Economic, Social, and Cultural Collaboration," and the topic of "Hallyu" or "The Korean Wave" in Japan was the main focus. The topics of how Hallyu has affected the sentiment between Koreans and Japanese, as well as how to promote understanding through mutual exchange were analyzed. A significant discussion was also brought about concerning what roles the media must play for Hallyu to culturally develop. Kim Woo-Sang, the director of the Institute of East and West Studies (IEWS) stated, "Advancement in the exchange programs between the best private universities of Korea and Japan will be the starting point of Yonsei University becoming a globalized school," and "through the Collaborative of Academic Degree Program, the future of the four schools' exchanges will flow smoothly."
