Holding the 2006 Seoul Symposium on Stem Cell Research The 2006 Seoul Symposium on Stem Cell Research, which was sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology and led by the Stem Cell Research Center (Director Kim Dong-Wook) and Severance Hospital, was held at the Centennial Hall on October 20th. Approximately 600 researchers from Korea and around the world participated in the Symposium. This Symposium invited distinguished academics in the field of stem cell research and provided an arena for discussion on recent research trends and future prospects. It was provided to aid in the revitalization of stem cell research. Twelve distinguished scientists from the U.S., Japan, Australia, and Korea were invited to the Symposium and led discussions on 12 themes such as"Controlling the Self-Reproduction of Stem Cells," "Prospects of Stem Cell Research," and "Specialization and Application of Stem Cell Research" during the four sessions. During the special lecture in the field of "Prospects of Stem Cell Research" world-renowned stem cell researcher, Paul J. Simmons (President of ISSCR) and Dr. Ron McKay (NIH), attracted much attention by presenting on the correct usage of stem cells, their application, and international ethical principles. Director Kim Dong-Wook and Professor Miles Cunningham of Harvard University presented that through their joint research they had each noted a decrease in symptoms of anxiety and depression after injecting embryonic stem cellsinto the brains of rats that were suffering from symptoms of anxiety and depression. They also announced that they are planning on beginning a clinical demonstration soon.
