Breakthrough in Neuronal Disorder Treatment

-Article Appears on Front Cover of Advanced Materials

A research team including Yonsei Biotechnology Professor Seung Woo Cho is in the spotlight for developing a novel platform based on a triboelectric nanogenerator. This platform holds significant potential for effectively reprogramming cells for the production of functional neuronal cells for therapeutic application. Their article, “Triboelectric Nanogenerator Devices: Triboelectric Nanogenerator Accelerates Highly Efficient Nonviral Direct Conversion and In Vivo Reprogramming of Fibroblasts to Functional Neuronal Cells,” was published September 7 on the front cover of Advanced Materials.

In particular, the team’s triboelectric nanogenerator platform is expected to be utilized in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and neuronal disorders that include Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral infarction, and spinal damage. According to Professor Cho: “This is the first research to confirm that electrical stimulation emulating endogenous electrical cues can actually contribute to neural regeneration through direct conversion to functional neuronal cells. We hope that this technology will be applied to neurogenesis in damaged areas and the treatment of neuronal disorders.”
