Development of Nanotechnology, Joint Research with UCSF

Focus on Intercellular Communication

Researchers from Yonsei and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) joined forces in a project to investigate intercellular communication using mechanogenetics. Mechanogenetics, which combines nanotechnology and genetics, involves a technology that can be used to control cell signaling.

The international research team was headed by Yonsei Professor Jin-woo Cheon and UCSF Professors Zev Gartner and Young-wook Jun. Professor Jun was previously a visiting scholar at Yonsei Institute for Basic Science (Y-IBS) Center for Nanomedicine. The results of the research were published in the June 6 issue of Cell under the title “A Mechanogenetic Toolkit for Interrogating Cell Signaling in Space and Time.”

The team members expect their technology to have important applications in the fields of medicine and biotechnology.
