YISSEM Re-designated as IOC Research Centre Korea for Prevention of Injury and Protection of Athlete Health

Recognized for world-class sports medical science research

The Yonsei Institute of Sports Science and Exercise Medicine (YISSEM), a research center affiliated with the Institute of Convergence Science (ICONS), has been re-designated as an official research center of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the third term from 2023 to 2026, following the first (2015-2018) and second (2019-2022) terms.

In the re-certification evaluation in 2022, the YISSEM was selected again through competition with more than 30 of the world’s leading sports medical science institutions, with 11 of them previously designated institutes.

This shows that Yonsei University's sports medical science research has been recognized as world-class, and the YISSEM will share human and material networks with ten medical research institutes worldwide over the next four years to prevent injuries and diseases of athletes and improve their health.

Yonsei University proved its global competitiveness by ranking 29th in the Sports Related subject in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023. Furthermore, based on the support of the IOC, the YISSEM will conduct joint research with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee and the World Taekwondo to take responsibility for athletes' health and conduct research to prevent injuries and diseases. In addition, it will provide research and support to prevent injuries in the general public as well as athletes in connection with local communities and governments.
