UIC Student Young-Eun Choi Selected as Italian Ambassador for a Day

International Women's Day commemoration to encourage women to enter the diplomatic sector

On March 7, the Embassy of Italy in Korea held the "Ambassador for a Day" event to commemorate International Women's Day on March 8. The Ambassador for a Day event began in 2022, intending to provide female students with the opportunity to experience the life of a senior diplomat and learn the responsibility of representing their government. This year, Young-eun Choi, a senior student at Yonsei University's Underwood International College (UIC), was honored to be selected as the second Italian Ambassador for a Day.

As the Italian Ambassador for a Day, Young-eun experienced the ambassador's work at the forefront through meeting with various domestic and international people, dealing with pending issues such as climate change, women's rights, public diplomacy, and South Korea-Italy cooperation.

On this day, Young-eun met with Ambassador Hyoeun Jenny Kim, the Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, and discussed strategies for responding to climate change between Korea and Italy, and had a video conference with Alessandra Schiavo, Principal Director for the Countries of Asia and Oceania in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy. She also attended a video conference with Ambassador Federico Failla to meet Director Stafania De Curtis of the Galileo Galilei Institute, a rare female head at a national institute.

For the economic sector, she also attended a meeting with the world-renowned designer and architect Ico Migliore, the ambassador for the Italian Design Days, and an executive meeting of the Italian Chamber of Commerce (ITCCK).

In addition, she carried out a dense schedule as a diplomat representing Italy by discussing gender equality through video conferences with Silvia Costantini, Vice President of the Diplomatic Women Association of Italy, and attending the regular meeting of the embassy, which included representatives of the Italian Institute of Culture and the Office of the Military Attendant for Defense.

"It was not indirect knowledge through books or videos, but a special and precious opportunity to spend the day as an ambassador by experiencing in person in the field," Young-eun, who finished her day as an ambassador, said, "I learned about the attitude and mindset that a diplomat should have and about economic, environmental, scientific, and cultural relations between South Korea and Italy, and experienced how Italy is making efforts to improve women's rights."
