Yonsei Grants Honorary Doctorate in Education to President Chung of Korea University

Engineer who has contributed excellently to education and academic development

On January 17, President Jin Taek Chung of Korea University received an honorary doctorate in education at the Chang Ki Won International Conference Hall in Yonsei-Samsung Library.


Yonsei University awarded an honorary doctorate in education to President Chung of Korea University for his outstanding contribution to education and academic development as an engineer and for establishing a new paradigm of education for the sustainable development of South Korea. Since taking office as the 20th president of Korea University in March 2019, President Chung has continued his journey of innovation by actively carrying out the civilization's historical task of digital transformation and establishing the future of the university, under the vision, "human-oriented Korea University that creates new values."


He led educational innovation by making various efforts, including ▲ Building the participatory smart campus, ▲ Establishing new high-tech departments, ▲ Reorganizing educational structures, ▲ Strengthening industry-academic cooperation, and ▲ Promoting educational innovation programs to foster creative convergence talents who will lead the future society,


He also devoted himself to building infrastructure for research and fostering creative talent, leaving outstanding achievements such as building ▲ the Mediscience Park and ▲ the Cheongdam Koyoung Campus, ▲ Renovating the Science Library and the Graduate School Library ▲ Construction of Jung Woon-Oh IT Liberal Arts Hall, and ▲ Raising funds for the construction of the Humanities and Social Sciences Hall.


In addition, he has practiced active social contributions to fulfill the university’s social responsibility by establishing ▲ the Diversity Council, ▲ the Next Normal Committee, ▲ the ESG Committee, ▲ the Social Service Organization, ▲ the Vaccine Innovation Center, ▲ the Korean Reunification Convergence Research Institute, ▲ the Institute for Aging Society, and ▲ the KU Medicine Center for ESG, and ▲ declaration of carbon neutrality.


He also contributes to the development of society and the nation in many ways, including engineering, education, and cooperation with local governments. He has served as the vice president of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (since 2021), the chair of the Korean Association of Private University Presidents (since 2022), the chair of the Korea University Sports Federation (since 2020), the chair of the Seoul City Campus Town Policy Council (since 2020), the vice chair of the Korean Council for University Education (since 2020), the chair of the 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan Establishment Committee under the Ministry of Science and ICT (since 2021), and the chair of the University Regulation Improvement Council (since 2022).


He is fulfilling his responsibilities in key positions in many fields, while also achieving outstanding research achievements. He received the industrial-academic cooperation meritorious person award from the Minister of Knowledge Economy and the outstanding paper award from the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) in 2012, and the academic award from the Korean Society for Fluid Machinery (KSFM) in 2013. In addition, he has worked as the chair and vice-chair of the KSFM, the chair and vice-chair of the KSME’s thermal engineering division, a director of the Korean Society of Combustion, and a director and an English journal editor of the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers. Also, he won the "Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals" at the University of Minnesota in the United States in 2021, and received an honorary doctorate in science from Waseda University in Japan in 2022.


President Chung, Korea University's first-ever president from the College of Engineering, made an outstanding contribution to education and academic development, greatly reflected the reality of expertise, and made Korea University a big leap forward as a university that transforms the world by cultivating creative future talent. In addition, he has established a new paradigm of education for the sustainable development of the country by performing active external activities.


"As prestigious private universities in Korea, both Korea University and Yonsei University have promoted their development through competition in good faith and friendship for a century, and have shared the growth and trend of our society," said President Seoung Hwan Suh of Yonsei University at the commencement ceremony, "Please congratulate the honorary doctorate of President Chung, who has successfully carried out the task of digital transformation, fulfilled the university’s social responsibility, and led Korea University toward the goal of fostering creative talent while serving as the 20th president of Korea University."


Professor Seung Han Park, Senior Vice President of Research and Dean of the Graduate School of Yonsei University, said in his recommendation speech, "I recommend granting an honorary doctorate in education to President Chung of Korea University. As an outstanding scholar and educator, he has built universities' new future image, led university education innovation for sustainable national development and fostering creative talent, and has achieved excellent social responsibility and vocation of the university through social contribution."


"Today's honorary doctorate is personally a great encouragement to my life as an engineering researcher, educator, and university administrator," said President Chung of Korea University, "From the perspective of the manager of Korea University, it is all the more precious because it is another fruit of the long-standing friendship and cooperation that Yonsei University and Korea University have built together, and a symbol of our promise to interact and develop together forever."

President Chung also said, "I am confident that if Korea University and Yonsei University continue to build friendship and trust through good-will competition, we will create valuable values that will change university education in Korea as well as the world, and open the future of humankind."
