“My ambition to travel abroad to immerse myself in Korean culture through Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) came from a decision I made while on an out-of-state internship in Massachusetts. I realized then the importance of experiencing different environments and diverse lifestyles when working in a hospital setting. Especially in large cities, medical professionals need to be equipped with the understanding and cultural awareness that patients of all backgrounds require in times of adversity and stress.
I had then made it my mission to travel to as many continents as possible during my studies in order to prepare for a career in medical care. My experience at YISS has been a firm building block in my resolve to become a caring professional and global citizen. The program also satisfied my growing curiosity in Korean culture. At home, I was already familiar with Korean basics—I taught myself Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, I watched Korean dramas, and my friends listened to K-pop. I even have a green belt in taekwondo! Through YISS, I was able to encounter the city of Seoul, witness Korea’s technological prowess, and even experience traditional Korean life.”
