On May 21, Yonsei Professor Moon Joo-ho and Ph.D. Candidate Areum Kim from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering announced the successful development of all-solution-processed indium-free transparent composite electrodes for use in thin-film solar cells. Professor Moon’s and Kim’s research paves the way for a low-cost, mass-produced alternative to transparent electrodes formed from indium tin oxide (ITO), as indium is an increasingly scarce element. According to the two, “The fully solution-processed indium-free composite films demonstrate not only good performance as transparent electrodes but also the potential for applications in various optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative electrode.”  In the future, then, these transparent composite electrodes should have important applications for liquid crystal displays and touchscreens.
