To celebrate the 129th anniversary of Yonsei’s founding, a number of events were held May 10 on the university’s campuses, including a cornerstone ceremony for the Jejoong Dormitory and Law School Dormitory and an alumni gathering in the Main Auditorium.  Centennial Hall played host to the official anniversary ceremony, which was followed by a luncheon at the President’s Residence.
Chaplain Cho Jae-gook presided over the ceremony, while President Jeong Kap-young gave the official anniversary address.  In his speech, President Jeong said, “I believe that the true spring of life has arrived on our campus this year,” referring to the number of building projects currently taking place on Yonsei’s campuses. These include the two new dormitories, the renovation of Baekyang-ro, and construction projects for the School of Business Administration and the Colleges of Engineering and Medicine. Proclaiming Yonsei the top private university in Korea and Asia, he cited Homer’s Odyssey as an example of determination and perseverance that the university should emulate.  Much as Odysseus overcame a series of challenges to return home to Ithaca, President Jeong insisted that Yonsei will see its projects through to the end.
Alumni Association President Park Sam-goo also spoke, reiterating the support of Yonsei alumni for the continuing development and advancement of their alma mater. Following his speech, there was a performance by the College of Music’s Men’s Choir, and several awards were presented, including the Social Volunteer Service Award, the Medical Research Award, and Academic Research Award.  Pastor Lee Sung-hee, who is also a Yonsei Corporate Trustee, led the official prayer.
