—Shares IBM’s Innovative Business Strategies and Advice for Achieving a Successful Career in Business

In anticipation of its 100th anniversary celebration next year, the Yonsei School of Business (YSB) welcomed Shirley Yu-Tsui, Chief Executive of IBM Korea, as the second featured speaker at the Global CEO Forum. Ms. Yu-Tsui, who was named Chief Executive of IBM Korea in January 2013, has worked for IBM for more than thirty years, holding a number of leadership positions for the company in the Asia-Pacific region over the past two decades. Ms. Yu-Tsui’s talk, which covered a range of topics, including IBM, the current Korean business market, and her advice for becoming a successful businessperson, took place April 15 in the Chang Ki-won International Conference Room of the Yonsei-Samsung Library.
Ms. Yu-Tsui began by noting her long-standing ties to YSB through her father, who received an MBA from Yonsei. She then emphasized the rapidly changing business environment in Korea, noting that only 12 out of every 100 Korean companies have survived since 1965. In her view, then, a successful company is one that can adapt to change, and thus innovation is fundamental to long-term business success. She gave the example of IBM, which has thrived for over a century due to its capacity to adapt and innovate; and today, it remains one of the most respected and profitable companies in the world. At the end of her speech, Ms. Yu-Tsui offered students her advice for achieving a successful business career, which included being sensitive to market trends and changes, knowing yourself and what you want, and thinking creatively while not being afraid to make mistakes. Lastly, she affirmed the importance of attitude, which has the power to change one’s life.
Commenting on Ms. Yu-Tsui’s talk at the Global CEO Forum, YSB Dean Park Young-ryeol said: “Having more women in the workforce and enhancing their career development is fundamental to the growth of South Korea. I hope many female students can find a role model in Ms. Yu-Tsui, and I hope that her presentation has expanded their global perspectives, while showing them the opportunities that exist to develop their careers globally.”
