From February 9 to 17, volunteers from Severance Hospital, the Olleh University Student Volunteers, and the Korean International Health and Medical Foundation (KIHMF) visited the cities of Tashkent and Chirchik in Uzbekistan to provide medical services to local residents. Yonsei College of Medicine Professor Kim Dong-soo (Pediatrics) led the team of fourteen volunteers.
During their stay in Uzbekistan, the team was able to provide free medical services to 814 patients in four different hospitals. Additionally, volunteers from Yonsei’s Department of Ophthalmology performed more than 2000 free eye exams for elementary school students in the two cities. As a result of these exams, the department will be giving eyeglasses to 453 students, and it will continue to monitor these students’ eyesight by sending volunteers to Uzbekistan every six months.
