On January 9, Yonsei University’s “Hope Deliverance” Volunteer Abroad Team arrived in Hanoi for an eight-day trip.  Supervised by Professor Nam Suk-in (Department of Social Welfare), the sixteen student team members spent much of the time volunteering at elementary schools and orphanages in the Vietnamese capital.  The entire program for the trip was planned by the student volunteers, the highlight of which was the play “Dog Poop,” which they performed, in Vietnamese, for the elementary school students and orphans.  Written by Kwon Jung-saeng, the play deals with a common “dog poop” that seems useless; however, its value is revealed when it is used to fertilize a dandelion.  In order to more effectively reach their audience, the Yonsei student volunteers decided to translate the play into Vietnamese; and, to better memorize their lines, the actors took Vietnamese language courses before the trip.  The play was warmly received by the orphans and students, and all the audiences were deeply touched by the fact that it was performed in their native language.    In addition to its work at orphanages and elementary schools in Hanoi, the Yonsei Volunteer Abroad Team also participated in cultural exchanges with local university students.  After returning to Korea, the team began preparations for a volunteer abroad trip to Katmandu, Nepal, which kicked off February 3.  Supervised by Professor Song In-han (Graduate School of Social Welfare), the volunteer team for Nepal, which also worked with orphans and elementary school students, consisted of fifteen Yonsei student volunteers.
