Yonsei Professor Park Hae-jeong (Department of Nuclear Medicine, College of Medicine) and the world-renowned neuroscientist, Professor Karl J. Friston, co-authored a review article for Science (IF 31.027), one of the world’s top scientific journals.  Appearing November 1 in a special issue on neuroscience, their article, “Structural and Functional Brain Networks: From Connections to Cognition,” suggests that the brain’s network architecture may provide the key to resolving a puzzling and enduring paradox presented by the human brain; namely, that despite the brain’s fixed anatomy, characterized by its connectivity, it possesses a vast functional repertoire, enabling action, perception, and cognition.  After reviewing recent advances in the understanding of brain networks, Professors Park and Friston concluded: “the emergence of dynamic functional connectivity, from static structural connections, calls for formal (computational) approaches to neuronal information processing that may resolve the dialectic between structure and function.”
