Yonsei University played host to the inaugural Cornell-Yonsei Debate Invitational and Debate Workshop January 11-12 in New Millennium Hall. Co-sponsored by the Underwood Union (UU), Yonsei’s premier English-language debate club, and the Cornell Forensics Society (CFS), the top-ranked university debate society in the world, the events attracted sixty-one Korean middle school and high school students for a weekend of intense debate competition and instruction on the fundamentals of argumentation and debate.  The weekend provided a unique opportunity for the student participants, as the debates and workshops were conducted entirely in English.
The Cornell-Yonsei Debate Invitational, in which the high school students participated, included a highly-competitive debate tournament and a workshop led by CFS Director Sam Nelson and CFS Coach Paul Gross. The aim of the invitational was to facilitate quality debating and improve the debating skills of the participants through the guidance of world-class instructors.  The Cornell-Yonsei Middle School Debate Workshop provided the participants with the opportunity to learn basic debating skills from the debate instructors, while observing the high school debaters in action.  The Middle School Workshop was designed to encourage the students to become competitive debaters in the future, and the purpose of both events was to strengthen the students’ capacity to engage in critical, logical, and persuasive debate.
