Agreement introduces new cooperative model, including establishment of overseas offices and joint research funding. On July 10, Yonsei University President Jeong Kap-young met with Jean-Dominique Vassalli, Rector of the University of Geneva (UNIGE) in Switzerland, at the Songdo International Campus in Incheon. At the meeting, they signed a strategic partnership MOU, which will include the establishment of overseas offices and joint research funding. The MOU is intended to vitalize research at both institutions through research exchanges. As part of the MOU, both schools agreed to set up a research fund to support early-stage research projects and research collaboration, and both schools will establish overseas offices at Yonsei and UNIGE. In October, President Jeong will visit Geneva to attend the commemorative ceremony for the opening of Yonsei’s overseas office at UNIGE. Yonsei’s new office will support research exchanges, while serving as a focal point for promoting and increasing the university’s networks in Europe. Yonsei University and UNIGE have maintained cooperative ties since 2003, when the joint-MBA dual degree program was established. In 2007, UNIGE and Underwood International College (UIC) signed an agreement allowing for undergraduate student exchanges between the two institutions. And in 2008, exchange opportunities for researchers and students at UNIGE were extended to all of Yonsei. On the same day, a Swiss delegation led by Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, Federal Councillor and Head of Switzerland’s Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, visited the international campus at Songdo. The delegation of experts in science and technology included Rector Vassalli, as well as Ralph Eichler (President, ETH Zurich), Dalia Schipper (Director General, Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training), and other educational and government officials. They were provided with an overview of Yonsei’s Residential College programs and given a tour of the Underwood Memorial Library. Afterwards, they discussed matters related to increasing cooperation and collaboration in research between Yonsei and Swiss universities.
