As the second health institution in Korea to offer robotic surgeries (the first being Yonsei’s Severance Hospital in Sinchon), Gangnam Severance Hospital recently performed its 1,000th da Vinci S robotic surgery. This surgical operation, conducted on a patient with head and neck cancer, was led by Professor Hong Hyun-jun (Otolaryngology) on June 28. The robotic surgeries have been performed on prostate cancer (359 surgeries), colorectal cancer (242), thyroid cancer (143), gynecologic cancer (111), kidney cancer (54), liver cancer (41), and lung cancer (21). Robotic surgeries have also been performed on patients suffering from head and neck cancer, as well as heart disease. According to Professor Jung Byung-ha (Urology, Gangnam Severance Hospital), as the advantages of minimally invasive robotic surgery continue to be recognized by researchers and patients, more and more types of surgery will be performed by robots. On July 19, the robotic surgery team at Gangnam Severance Hospital held the 1,000th da Vinci Robotic Surgery Accomplishment Seminar, analyzing its achievements thus far and discussing plans for the future.
