In late June, Yonsei University hosted the annual meeting of the Society for Economic Dynamics (SED), a prestigious academic organization devoted to dynamic economics. Held June 27-29 in Daewoo Hall (also known as the Business and Economics Complex), this was the first annual meeting of the SED to take place in Asia, as all the previous ones had been held in Europe or North America. The SED, which was established in 1990, counts among its founders such highly respected economists as Dr. Robert Lucas Jr., Dr. Thomas Sargent, and Dr. Edward Prescott. Encouraging and supporting high quality scientific research in all areas of economics, the SED is particularly noted for the conferences it has organized related to macroeconomics and macro-finance. This year’s meeting was attended by more than 500 academics and economists from central banks and other financial institutions. Some of the most prominent figures participating in the conference included Dr. Robert Lucas Jr. (1994 Nobel Laureate in Economics), Dr. Edward Prescott (2004 Nobel Laureate), Dr. Mark Watson (Princeton University), Dr. Harold Cole (University of Pennsylvania), Dr. Gianluca Violante (New York University), Dr. Christopher Waller (Senior Vice President, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis), and Dr. Kei-Mu Yi (Senior Vice President, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis). Potential future Nobel Prize candidates, Dr. Nobuhiro Kiyotaki (Princeton University) and Dr. Robert Shimer (University of Chicago), were also in attendance. The fact that Korea was chosen as the host nation for this year’s SED meeting reflects the continuing advancement of economics research in Korea, as well as the many important contributions made by Koreans to the field. In order to ensure that this first meeting in Asia was a success, a number of scholars and other individuals worked tirelessly to organize the conference. These included Dr. Chang Yong-sung (Yonsei University) and Dr. Shin Hyun-song (Princeton University and former Presidential Secretary for International Economics), along with researchers and officials from Korean financial institutions, such as the Bank of Korea and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
