The Seriousness of International Environmental Problems On May 28, some 180 students attended a special lecture by the former Prime Minister of Korea and Yonsei alumnus, Han Seung-soo, in the International Conference Room of YIC’s Underwood Memorial Library. In his lecture, “A Primary Task for the Global Community: Climate Change and Water, Is There a Future for Mankind?,” Dr. Han emphasized the severity of global climate change and water shortages, arguing that these environmental issues must be addressed through cooperative international efforts. In a survey related to Dr. Han’s visit, many students expressed their pride in attending this lecture by a Yonseian who has played such a prominent role in the efforts of the global community to address climate change and other environmental issues. The first Korean to serve as the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Dr. Han was instrumental in passing the OECD Green Growth Strategy with unanimous consent. While the vast majority of student attendees were very satisfied with Dr. Han’s lecture, many suggested that Yonsei should provide more opportunities like this for students in the future. They felt that it is very important for Yonsei students to be exposed to current trends and initiatives in the global community, and that such lectures and discussions provide students with a fuller understanding of what it means to be a global leader in the twenty-first century.
